RestAuth attempts to provide a shared authentication service using the REST paradigm. Therefore simple HTTP requests can be used to perform the basic CRUD operations on the users known to RestAuth.

Installation and setup

RestAuth itself is written in Python and is based on Django. You therefore need python-2.4 or later (python-3 is currently unsupported by Django) and Django 1.2. Please see the installation instructions on how to install Django.

The services that use RestAuth must authenticate them self too. There are several ways of setting this up, see the ServiceAuthentication.

Legal usernames

RestAuth treats all usernames as case insensitive. Therefor, the users "Mati", "MATI", "mAti" and "mati" all are considered the same.

For now, the issue of legal usernames is ignored, as we need further investigation. The available usernames need to be restricted (by default, at least) to the "lowest common denominator", so you can login into every system. Please see username considerations for additional details.
